Quality plan for waste unveiled for Wales

The Welsh Government has published a Collections, Infrastructure and Markets Sector (CIMS) Plan to outline how the economy can provide sustainable, high quality recyclate for reprocessors of recycled material and manufacturers of products from recycled materials.

The CIMS Plan covers the collection and management of all waste material in Wales. The plan makes recommendations and offers advice on local authorities delivering the most effective, efficient and sustainable collection systems for recycling.

Environment minister John Griffiths said: “This plan requires the waste industry in Wales to turn itself into a resource management industry.  My vision is that this industry will be recognised as world class in its ability to deliver a sustainable service which is respected the world over.

“I want Wales to be attractive to inward investment and, at the same time, be able to retain its home-grown industries on account of the high quality, sustainable, resource management services that will be on offer.”

Publication coincided with the promotion of Wales of the Resource Association (RA), whose key objectives include raising awareness of employment opportunities and working with local authorities to improve recycling services.

Griffiths, who was at the launch, said: “The vision of the Resource Association is one that the Welsh Government shares. We too want a resource-efficient material economy that realises value, recognises quality and seeks to maintain the integrity of the secondary materials that are too commonly treated as waste.”

  • The first version of this article wrongly suggested there was to be a separate RA in Wales.
