Press release secrets
The press release is to PR what the spreadsheet is to accounting or the letter is to law. It’s the most basic and most used form of communication in the PR toolbox. Unfortunately, it also happens to be the tool that is often misused.

Surviving the downturn
In tough economic times, it can be tempting to view PR and marketing as luxuries that should be first for the chop. While it makes sense to trim expensive campaigns and scale down ambitious launch plans - to halt all proactive activity is a risk.

Dramatic price drops for recyclate that started last October have captured the national media’s attention and led to claims of ‘mountains’ of recyclables, unable to be sold, being stockpiled around the country

The PR Survey
In the world of Presidential elections, opinion polls and surveys have become a vital tool. Just ask Barack Obama or John McCain. Although not always reliable when it comes to voting habits (people say one thing, but do another), we are still fascinated by them. The media are too.  That's why surveys are one of the most popular tools in the PR box. more...

Manchester and Merseyside PFI lessons on how to avoid delays
Category:
Local Authority Waste Management

Delays can be an inevitable part of large or complicated contracts such as waste authority private finance initiative (PFI) deals. But setbacks can create extensive extra costs or even the possible loss of PFI credits. The UK’s two biggest PFI projects have both experienced delays. The deals of Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority (GMWDA) and Viridor/Laing worth £3.3bn, and the Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority (MWDA) worth £3bn are projects the industry is watching closely. But are there lessons for the other PFI projects in the pipeline?

Larger companies lose out in waste exemptions review
Category:
General
One could speculate that the Environment Agency (EA) believes the ‘three Rs’ denote regulation, red tape and revenue. The Government, through the EA, has published its consultation on revised waste exemptions from environmental permitting (MRW, August 8). My assessment of the proposals at this stage is that the EA has enhanced its power to regulate, with a consequential increase in red tape, and its ability to earn revenue.  more...

Long-term waste contracts tie councils into inflexible pricing
Category:
General Local Authority
It has been the tradition for local authorities to enter into long-term contracts with waste management companies to help them meet their recycling targets. But by doing this they have missed out on opportunities to share in the huge profits generated by the soaring value of recyclable materials. So will the high profits now make them think before they sign up? more...

UK recycling catches up with the Continent but there's more to do
Category:
General Local Authority
Recent waste data from the Government shows that the UK is catching up with its European neighbours on the waste and recycling performance front. Recycling rates continue their upward trajectory, reaching 33.9%, while waste is decreasing. So it’s good news so far from the Government’s provisional findings. But are the results enough to allow ourselves a little breather? Definitely not. more...

Store packaging growth halts as Courtauld Commitment kicks in
Category:
Retail
For the first time in many decades the UK has halted grocery packaging growth, despite a growth in retail sales and 0.5% increase in the UK population. This success has been achieved with the help of the Courtauld Commitment – a voluntary agreement between UK retailers to design out packaging waste. The Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP), along with its 32 retail signatories, which include Asda, the Co-operative Group and Coca Cola, has been measuring packaging reduction targets in terms of weight.

Credit crunch creates impetus to get more from labour spend
Category:
General Waste Management
Alison Harter, sales and marketing director from de Poel Consulting, says that by examining labour spend, waste sector companies can make big savings during lean economic times. There is little doubt that the current economic slowdown has started to have an impact on the waste industry. Now, more than ever before, we are witnessing a need for businesses in the sector to get smarter and streamline a wide range of their operations.
