Consultation on potential waste sites in Wiltshire and Swindon

Ruth Faulkner
08 Feb 2010

People living in Wiltshire and Swindon are invited to have their say on potential sites for managing rubbish in the region over the next 15 years.

A total of 52 potential sites have been earmarked for a variety of uses including recycling, landfill and waste treatment.

Wiltshire Council is working with Swindon Borough Council to produce the joint Waste Local Development Framework which will set out how they plan to manage waste in the future.

The Waste Site Allocation Development Plan Document forms the final step in preparing the waste framework and the current informal consultation process will aid in compiling the final shortlist of sites.

The councils originally published an extensive list of potential sites back in March 2006. However, since that time changes to Government regulations on waste have led to the list being reduced.

There is currently a list of 52 sites which are considered potentially suitable. Of these, 14 are located in north Wiltshire, 10 in south Wiltshire, 12 in the east of the county and nine in the west.

There are also seven sites located in the Swindon Borough Council area.

Wiltshire Council cabinet member for economic development, housing and planning John Brady said: “This part of the consultation is designed to let people have their say on the initial set of proposals.

“We would like to hear from people, organisations and companies who have local knowledge of the area to help understand and address the likely range of issues associated with each site.

“We are keen to be open and transparent and this will not be the final chance for people to comment. We will take on board every response we receive to formulate the next stage of the plan.”

As well as the current consultation the sites will also be reviewed by consultants who will undertake detailed environmental assessments of each area. The consultation closes on March 17.
