£3m fleet is fuel efficient

Biffa has deployed a new fleet of 20 collection and street cleansing vehicles to supports its contract with Stratford-on-Avon District Council, one of England’s top recycling authorities.

The £3m fleet, which began operating in September, comprises 13 26-tonne and five 32- tonne trucks which collect dry   recyclable materials, food waste, green waste and refuse, as well as a mechanical pavement sweeper, a hot jet washer and two street barrows with suction units.

The collection trucks, all based on Mercedes Econics chassis with Faun bodies and Zoeller lifting equipment, feature fuel-efficient engines to help lessen their environmental impact, increased capacity and more advanced technology to help protect the crew. The vehicles are fitted with 3600 cameras for improved crew safety, which record from the time the vehicle is started to 10 minutes after the ignition is turned off. They also provide a record of collections and crew working practices and behaviour.

An audible warning device is activated when the vehicle is reversing, and communications technology can transmit real-time information to the customer services team, helping to improve efficiency and response times.
