NRAs 2019: Recycling Excellence – SME Organisation

WINNER: MGB Plastics

MGB manufactures up to 2.5 million bins a year. The business has sought to lead by example with its recycling campaign which focused on three core areas: effective waste management, promoting recycled material and partnership.

The company began by setting a number of strategic goals at a senior management level. As it promotes an ‘open book’ culture across the business, these were communicated to all staff, including its largely British supply chain.

JUDGES’ COMMENT: “This is a good example of an end-to-end solution from a business that has challenged historic perceptions, invested in itself, sought to drive out use of virgin material and increase recycled content.”

Delivery of the campaign began with an investment programme of more than £15m to date. This focused on its entire business, including UK manufacturing infrastructure, people and processes, enabling it to adopt industry best practice at every level.

With targets based on effective waste management, MGB commissioned an onsite regrind facility which enabled it to recycle 100% of the scrap polymer produced during its manufacturing process. As a result, MGB became the first wheeled bin manufacturer to be certified by the Carbon Trust for zero waste to landfill.

Alongside this, it introduced new injection moulding equipment, ensuring that machinery not only performed optimally but in the most sustainable manner, and allowing year-on-year reductions in energy consumption.

MGB worked with its technology polymer partner to develop a new recycled material formulation. Unlike the use of regrind, MGB uses a compound formulation where additives lost during a polymer’s life are dosed in, so it performs as new at a molecular level. The formulation has been extensively tested, meeting the highest industry quality standards and allows the manufacturer to offer up to 70% recycled material, as well as helping to promote British recycled plastic.

Its staff have worked in partnership with councils to develop container systems that match their needs.
