WINNER: Thompson Recycling & Landfill
Thompson Recycling & Landfill, incorporated in late 2014, started operating its new recycling facility in late 2015.
Landfills in its area were reaching capacity due to the high level of construction & demolition waste produced during urban regeneration, while regulatory constraints meant few new ones were emerging.
JUDGES’ COMMENT: “They are doing something enterprising and have shown good growth in an area that others to date have talked about but not managed to do successfully.”
But competitor quarry businesses were undercutting high-quality virgin aggregate prices by offering lowquality recycled alternatives.
Thompson saw its chance and set up a recycling business to provide a sustainable source of affordable recycled products that were like-forlike in specification to virgin material.
Strict control over the infeed material means it produces high-spec recycled aggregates and sands that meet BSI and Highway Standard specifications. The company has achieved a CEmarked sand that complies with BS EN 12620 – a 100% recycled product for use in high specification and structural concrete. It was the first firm in the UK to offer such a product.
It was also the first company in Scotland to extract and recycle from its existing landfill site, increasing the landfill’s void space. It achieved zero waste to landfill in 2018, with 100% of incoming materials being recycled through the plant, while also recycling existing landfilled materials.
The bespoke plant was designed specifically to handle the waste soils and clays landfilled in its area. The plant has provided the business with access to its own sand, allowing it to diversify into ready-mix concrete production, while recent additions mean it can expand the range of sands and enter new markets such as equestrian surfaces, golf courses and pre-cast building projects.
Recycled product output has increased annually since the operations began, and turnover has also grown annually from incorporation to more than £5m for the year ending 31 October 2018.
