NRAs 2019: Team of the Year – Commercial

WINNER: Axion Polymers

Axion Polymers extracts and refines a high-quality engineering polymer from auto shredder waste into engineering polymers capable of matching the qualities of virgin material.
Key to its success is the exhaustive testing of clients’ current materials and matching these to bespoke formulations of recycled polymers.

The team works together to create a bespoke formulation that is as close a match as possible to the sampled material. Once matched, the team liaises with production colleagues to run a larger sample that can be sent to the potential customer.

JUDGES’ COMMENT: “They demonstrated how each individual works together effectively for the overall strength and success of the team.”

The team comprises process development engineer Dr Pasika Chongcharoenthaweesuk, business development manager Mark Keenan, sales and logistics manager Amy Stiven, commercial co-ordinator Martina Verescakova, sales executive Sam Mahoney, SWAPP operations manager Dom Lorimer and commercial operations manager Laura Smith.

Amy will identify an opportunity, such as a trade show enquiry or a referral and discuss this with the team. From there, Mark will visit the client to gain further understanding about their requirements, discuss what material they are currently using and what properties and features they would like to have in a new recycled polymer.

The team creates the required recycled polymer specification using additives and blends to achieve the exact properties required by clients, such as strength, melt flow and appearance. Small-scale lab trials follow, led by Pasika, with the results fed back to Mark to discuss with the client. If the client is happy, a small batch is provided to run on their machines, with Mark helping to supervise trials at the client’s premises.

In recent years, investment in the team’s expertise and lab equipment has opened up opportunities for innovative construction products, such as a type of roof tile, which was designed using recycled material.
