NRAs 2019: Waste Reduction Initiative – Commercial

WINNER: Globechain

Globechain is an online reuse marketplace which connects companies with charities and others to reuse unwanted items. Its focus is within the retail, commercial, medical and construction sectors.

Members pay an annual fee to list their unwanted items so they are available to others for free. This cuts their disposal costs and Globechain provides them with data on social, economic and environmental impacts.

JUDGES’ COMMENT: “This was innovative and demonstrated fantastic results. As a systems-orientated solution, it has real potential to reduce waste and have a wide impact.”

This shows the direct and indirect effects of all items reused through its website, and can be used in members’ CSR reports, for BREEAM points and grant applications, as well as helping organisations to achieve their UN sustainable development goals.

The website has enabled corporate clients to collectively divert more than 5,000 tonnes of waste from landfill through connection with charities, NGOs and social enterprises.

Globechain has around 12,000 registered members, including H&M, Invesco Perpetual, Skanska, ISG, NHS, B&Q, Skanska, Nando’s, Radisson Edwardian Blu Hotels and Simba Sleep.

The marketplace was developed after its founder, who was working at an investment bank, discovered that an office move meant it was spending around £50,000 per person for 300 people on the disposal of furniture and computers, most of which could have been used by others. She began a trial to gauge how much interest there would be in a B2B reuse marketplace, before taking on clients.

By measuring transaction speed, the materials that had high demand and the challenges businesses face over their waste, Globechain was able to improve user experience, grow membership and test new products.

The business has recently upgraded its system for scalability and started trials in Germany and the US, with distribution in Africa.
