Biffa fined for illegal waste activity

Biffa Waste Services has been fined £8,000 for illegal waste activity at a site in Essex.

The company was also ordered to pay £2,282 costs after storing 47 containers of mixed waste at its Basildon depot, which was not supposed to be used as a waste transfer station.

The Environment Agency told Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court waste had been stored at the site for about two months in breach of regulations.

It said Biffa had failed to respond to verbal advice from not to store waste at the depot after two previous fires there.

EA officer Stephanie Winnard said: “As one of the largest waste companies, Biffa had a responsibility to comply with the regulations.

“In this case the company failed to comply and 47 containers of mixed waste was inappropriately stored on a site without a permit.”
