Consumables giants including Coca-Cola and Nestle have joined with waste firm TerraCycle to give people the chance to buy common products in refillable packaging.
The Loop system – launched at the World Economic Forum in Davos – will allow consumers to place empty containers out for collection and replenishment.
Designed to slash packaging waste, the initiative will come to the UK later this year after initial runs in Paris and New York.
Retail giant Tesco will operate Loop in this country, with delivery firm UPS and waste company Suez also playing roles in the system.
After shopping on the Loop or Tesco websites, people will receive products in bespoke crates. They can then place empties back out for collection and custom cleaning before receiving replenished packaging. Meanwhile any used products will be recycled or reused.
Consumer product companies signing up to the initiative include Procter & Gamble, PepsiCo, Unilever, The Body Shop, Beiersdorf and Nature’s Path.
TerraCycle chief executive Tom Szaky said: “As a response to the global challenge in managing waste and the opportunity to improve consumers’ experience, a group of committed global brands, retailers and infrastructure companies,, along with the World Economic Forum have come together to create a new way to more responsibly consume products.
“Loop will not just eliminate the idea of packaging waste, but greatly improve the product experience and the convenience in how we shop. Through Loop, consumers can now responsibly consume products in specially designed durable, reusable or fully recyclable packaging made from materials such as alloys, glass and engineered plastics. When a consumer returns the packaging, it is refilled or the content is reused or recycled through groundbreaking technology.”
