A closer look at Wybone's new Strobe recycling unit

What is your product?

The Strobe is a solar powered, multi-sensory, talking recycling unit.

How does it work?

Designed to encourage and promote recycling, the Strobe is powered by solar panels and features audio-visual feedback when an item is deposited.

Where would it ideally be used?

The unit works equally well outdoors, powered by solar panels, or indoors as it can be adapted to work from mains power, meaning the unit can be used anywhere.

How is it different?

The Strobe is an industry first in interactive recycling – it is the only unit to feature braille, solar power, illuminated waste stream signs, an illuminated deposit counter, transparent recycling sections and recorded audio messages that play back when the unit is used.

What benefits does it offer?

Its features combined are designed to boost recycling rates. The ‘talking’ element, illuminated signs and deposit counter encourage recycling, while the clear panels help prevent cross contamination of waste streams because it is easy to see where your waste should go. The unit very visually promotes recycling and features advertising space that can help to recoup the cost of buying the unit.

Where has it been used?

These units are on trial at Swansea and Bangor Universities at the moment and feedback is very positive.

What about maintenance?

The units are very easy to install and the solar panels make them stand-alone, so little maintenance is required. The adverts and recorded messages can be changed very easily helping to keep the unit fresh and encourage people to keep coming back to see what’s new.

What is its life span?

We design our products to have a long life-span and offer a 10 year anti-perforation warranty with all our galvanised steel products.

How is it future-proofed?

We manufacture our products in-house so we can offer a fully bespoke service meaning we can modify or adapt our products, including the Strobe to suit our customer’s requirements.

Any future applications?

We hope to take different elements from the Strobe and adapt them into some of our other products in the future. We’d like to be able to offer the illuminated waste stream signs and talking element in a variety of our existing recycling units, helping to encourage recycling and boost recycling rates.

How many have you sold and where?

The Strobe units are on trial at Bangor and Swansea Universities for six months, but we hope to sell to many more universities, shopping centres and venues.
