Construction Recycler of the Year: Kier Construction

Kier partnered up with Premier Waste UK and have been working together with the aim of zero waste to landfill.

Its quantifiable achievements include: increasing waste diverted from landfill from 12% to 98%; recycling 387 tonnes of packaging; moving from the use of skips to bins; diverting 280 tonnes of timber to the National Wood Recycling Project; reusing demolition materials resulting in saving 680 tonnes of imported material; creating a community storage area on site so subcontractors can place unwanted materials for other subcontractors to see and use again; and holding open days so the local community can come to site and remove unwanted materials, so saving skips.

It also worked with Premier to produce a bespoke website that gives instant information on waste streams, compares sites, gives scores to each site, predicts waste usage for various sites, displays CO2 information and produces management reports.

The pair have been working hard to eliminate the final 2% of its waste stream going to landfill - this consists of fines, packaging, insulation and various contaminated materials. By working to gain a consistent supply of this part of the waste stream so it is suitable for heat recovery, it should be able to drop its waste to landfill by a further 1.6% and possibly zero by December 2013

The judges said:

“This is a construction company choosing to minimise its waste. The entry showed lots of initiatives that have been really thought through. Its on-site community storage area is a great idea and shows a strong commitment to reuse and its figures on savings demonstrate a good cost saving message to others. We are looking forward to seeing this widely implemented across Kier and embedded in its culture.”
