NRAs 2017: Construction Recycler of the Year, sponsored by Hadfield Wood Recyclers


One of the key factors in I&H Brown (IHB) winning the tender to build a multi-storey car park (MSCP) on the site of an existing MSCP in Warrington town centre was its approach to the demolition of the existing four-storey structure and, in particular, the environmental consideration that was planned and executed.

Warrington town centre is a centuries old urban development, and its infrastructure struggles to cope with the requirements of the public and business sectors that are based there today.

Traffic management was critical to the project in minimising the number of vehicle movements and organising the delivery of goods and equipment on a ‘just in time’ basis, providing only one vehicle on-site at any given time.

The existing MSCP structure dated from the early 1970s, and it was built using prestressed concrete beams and planks, supported by concrete columns.

JUDGES’ COMMENT: “Working within the constraints of the original footprint and with limitations due to operating in the centre of a major city, IHB show true partnership between sustainability and business.”

The estimated volume of concrete in the structure was around 4,500cu m, which would require some 225-250 vehicle movements off-site to dispose of the material. This would equate to 500-550 round trip journeys.

Through early engagement with its design team, IHB recognised that, by employing a crushing/screening plant on-site, it could reuse the demolished concrete as 6F2 fill material in the required pile mat and sub-base infill below the ground floor slab of the new building.

This strategy also meant that it would minimise quarrying and the import of new infill materials and their associated transport.

IHB’s proposition was unique in the returned tenders for the project. In practice, it provided logistical complications to the site team in managing the recovered material while starting the substructure construction works, but it was well worth it for the environmental gains.
