NRAs 2017: Corporate Recycler of the Year

WINNER: Wiles Greenworld

With its fleet of 3.5-tonne transit vans delivering office equipment and supplies to businesses in London each day, Wiles Greenworld recognised the opportunity to support its customers by helping them recycle their office waste.

Historically, as deliveries were made, its vans would get emptier and, by the end of the day, it would have empty vans driving around – contributing to the capital’s air quality issues, congestion and climate change. By collecting waste as a backload the company realised it could help reduce these factors.

With its vehicles already ‘on patch’, the cost of collecting recycling is marginal and allows the business to provide the service free of charge, so adding value to its relationship with its clients.

To complete its ‘total waste management’ solution, it has formed partnerships to fill any gaps in its offering, such as food waste, although there is a charge associated with this. Confidential waste destruction also carries a charge, reflecting the costs associated with maintenance of a secure chain of custody.

JUDGES’ COMMENT: “This is innovative but really simple, demonstrating the art of the possible. It is about changing clients’ attitudes and providing a shift in culture. Transferable and replicable, this has the potential to reshape how things are done.”

The overarching driver for the scheme is Wiles Greenworld’s environmental policy, which commits it to maintaining its position as the industry leader regarding emissions reductions, minimising environmental impact and promoting sustainability among its suppliers and customers.

This includes ambitions to promote recycling both internally and among its customers and suppliers; to grow its recycling service every year; to investigate innovative ways to recycle products and work with companies who encompass closed-loop thinking; and to supply products that help to cut waste production in an office environment.

Implementing the scheme involved giving drivers one-to-one training on understanding waste transfer note procedures, adapting its logistical software systems to build in recycling reporting data and constructing a specific recycling area with a compactor in the warehouse.

While the recycling scheme was introduced as a value added service, it has been a key driver of business growth through winning and retaining clients, gaining trust and loyalty.
