Crews damping down waste site fire

Crews are damping down hot spots at a recycling site in West Lancashire after tackling a fire overnight.

Firefighters from Skelmersdale and Ormskirk were called to reports of a blaze at CCC Waste Management’s recycling facility on Simonswood Industrial Estate.

Some eight fire engines from Lancashire, Greater Manchester and Merseyside fire and rescue services tackled the fire. United Utilities assisted with water supply at the scene.

Lancashire’s service said the building was approximately 150m x 50m and contained household recyclable waste.

There were five HGVs on-site which firefighters protected using a water curtain.

“Firefighters have managed to contain the fire using ground monitors, and we are confident that surrounding business will not be affected.

“However, anyone living or working in the area near the smoke plume is advised to keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution.”

An investigation will take place into the cause of the fire.

CCC Waste Management did not comment when contacted by MRW.
