Cyclists safe around trucks

Veolia is investing £1m across its waste management fleet on equipment to alert cyclists.

Vision Techiques’ TurnAlarm technology delivers audio and visual warnings to approaching cyclists. High-intensity LEDs flash from a side-mounted position and a speaker delivers an audible warning.

Veolia has also included cyclist awareness in procurement, with the system now a standard purchase on every new vehicle above 3.5 tonnes. The scheme includes a cyclist awareness training programme for drivers, which will be completed by September 2015, building on Veolia’s existing scheme in London to obtain a ‘cyclist’s eye view’ of a HGV.
