529kg of municipal solid waste (MSW) was generated per person in the UK in 2009, according to figures published by Eurostat, the European Union statistical office.
The UK result stood a little above the average level of MSW per person for EU27 members, which stood at 513kg. However, the UK treated an average of 538kg per person, 34kg above the EU waste treatment average of 504kg per person.
The figures also reveal that 48% of UK waste was sent to landfill in 2009, with 26% of municipal waste recycled, 14% composted and 11% incinerated.
UK figures compare favourably with EU averages, where 38% was landfilled, 20% incinerated, 24% recycled and 18% composted.
The announcement follows an MRW article published in January 2011, which found that in 2008 the UK’s overall MSW per person figure stood at 565kg.
