Q: What is your technology?
Optronics 360, the world’s first 360° surround view camera system for industrial and commercial vehicles.
Q: Why is it needed?
Accidents and fatalities involving machinery and commercial vehicles are all too often the result of blind spots that prevent the driver or operator being able to see all around the vehicle and at a distance to stop in time.
Q: How does it work?
Optronics 360 combines a camera system, convex mirrors, a monitor and a high-performance programmable electronic control unit (ECU) that uses heavy-duty signal processing to overcome distortion. The surround view system displays a composite realtime view on the operator’s screen that looks as if it has been taken from above the vehicle.
Q: Where will it be used?
We expect it to be used widely across the mining, quarrying and construction industries, on vehicles and machines such as dump trucks and excavators, including fixed and elevated cab versions for materials handling.
Q: What are the benefits?
It takes visibility to the next level by giving operators a realtime, bird’s eye view of their entire vehicle and its surroundings.
Q: Where has it been used?
The technology has already been successfully proven in the high-end passenger car market, on the BMW 5 series and the Land Rover Range Rover models.
Q Any savings?
It can reduce the number of collisions with everyday objects on-site that result in machine damage, downtime and costly repairs. But the really important savings are in increasing safety, protecting life and fulfilling duty of care - as well as avoiding possible prosecution, compensation claims and reputational damage.
Q: What about installation?
Optronics 360 is installed by Spillard’s team of experienced engineers. They programme the ECU to suit the needs of the individual vehicle and its operating environment.
Q: What is its life span?
The first Optronics rear view systems were fitted in 1996 and are still working today. The Optronics 360 system should be no different.
Q: How is it future-proofed?
ECUs are upgradable through software changes. The only limitations are processing power.
Q: Can it be integrated with other systems?
Yes, other existing camera systems can be integrated easily into its user interface. It can also be used in combination with other convex mirrors that also naturally enhance visibility.
