Asda wins top prize

Retail giant Asda has won an environmental award for its commitment to reducing waste and tackling packaging reduction used for its own brand products.

It scooped the management category award at this years Business Commitment to the Environment (BCE) Environmental Leadership Awards. The BCE is run and administered by UK businesses.

Asdas winning entry hinged on three key initiatives; its commitment to sending zero waste to landfill by 2010, a focus on reducing its own brand food packaging weight and plastic bag use by 25% by the end of 2008, and its commitment to cutting CO2 emissions from its stores and depots by 2012.

Asda strategic director Doug Gurr said: Were absolutely delighted to win this award. It recognises all the hard work we have put in over the past 12 months to drive forward our packaging commitments.
