AWS Eco Plastics embarks on “new chapter of growth”

Plastic bottle recycler AWS Eco Plastics has changed its name to ECO Plastics to “mark a new chapter of growth” for the business.

The rebranding exercise marks a “growing focus” on food-grade rPET, which is seeing increasing demand from beverage brands that want to make more use of sustainable packaging.

Following a £15m phase of expansion, ECO Plastics expects to produce 40,000 tonnes of food-grade rPET a year – almost 90% of the domestic total.

The rebranding exercise follows the reopening of its £17m plastics sorting facility in Hemswell, Lincolnshire, after a fire in 2009. It is expected to process 140,000 tonnes of waste plastic a year by the middle of 2011.

Chairman Peter Gangsted said: “This announcement is a reflection of the progress we have made in establishing ECO Plastics as the European market leader during the past five years. But it’s also a statement of intent. Having recently reopened our plant, we’re now already looking at expansion plans that will make us a world leader.”
