Babcock International may withdraw from Wakefield waste PFI

The future of the £700m Wakefield waste PFI has been called into question after preferred bidder Babcock International revealed it was “reviewing exit options”.

According comments made in its half year statement, Babcock International Group – formerly VT group commented: “We are currently undertaking a review of our business portfolio as part of the strategic planning process which may lead to further changes to the structure.

“The waste operation is considered not to be a strategic growth opportunity for the Group and exit options are being reviewed.”

Wakefield Metropolitan Borough Council told MRW’s sister publication Infrastructure Journal that it was still in talks with Babcock over the future of the 180,000 tonne facility and declined to comment further.
