Basel Convention encourages speedy mobile recycling

MOBILE telephones replaced by new models given as Christmas gifts should be recycled as soon as possible, so they protect their value as a material, says new advice from the Basel Convention secretariat.

Detailed draft guidelines on the collection, disposal and recycling of mobiles says: “As reuse or recycling value may drop quickly users should be encouraged to avoid storing, or setting aside, an unneeded mobile phone, and to promptly deliver it to a collection system.”

The waste convention’s secretariat said that mobile collection points should be plentiful and publicised, and free to use.

Furthermore, it said specialists should be on hand to assess whether a phone could be reused or broken into components.

They should be collected with batteries in place, it added.
