Being green pays

UK businesses could save £5.8 billion a year through sound environmental operations that include cutting waste right down.

Such activities could also make them money, with companies showing high environmental standards financially outperforming other companies by up to 43%. Ethical investment is said to be worth about £5.5 billion with ethical shoppers spending £26 billion a year.

These figures were given in the Environment Agency report Spotlight 2005 which also suggests that food and drink manufacturers and retailers could be doing more to preserve our environment.
