Better data on waste is a high priority, says Defra official

Getting better data on commercial and industrial waste is a high priority according to Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) head of waste strategy Daniel Instone. Speaking at the Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee (LARAC) conference in Telford, Instone admitted: Data on commercial and industrial waste is not as good as it should be. To address this, he said research would be needed to explore the data gaps and properly mine the information that was already available. The first step is to get the research contract out. It is critical that we get better data on the non-municipal side of waste. Image: Defra head of waste Daniel Instone
