Biodegradable polythene envelopes to hit UK

A biodegradable polythene mailing envelope, believed to be the first of its kind in the UK, is being launched.

The Eco Poly Jacket will be priced the same as conventional bags and promises to offer identical performance.

Newly developed film used in the Eco Poly Jacket includes an additive which is added at the beginning of the extrusion process to reduce the molecular weight, so that the plastic can be consumed by micro-organisms. After about 18 months the film degrades to water, a small amount of carbon dioxide and biomass, which can then be composted.

Maker, PAC 3000, hope that increased environmental awareness will make the bag, available in seven sizes, attractive to publishers and mail order companies who widely use them.
