Boost in sales of recycled woodchip

A marketing campaign aimed at informing the landscaping sector of the benefits of recycled woodchip for use as a surfacing solution has boosted sales by 11,500 tonnes in just 12 months.

The ‘Recycled Wood Works Wonders’ campaign aimed at local authority and commercial procurers and specifiers, landscape architects and contractors, saw 60% of wood recyclers’ sales increase.

Before the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) campaign only 2% of local authorities were aware of using recycled wood products for landscaping — a figure that rose to 18% as a result of the campaign.

WRAP material development manager for wood Julia Turner said: “Prior to our campaign recycled woodchip was one of the best-kept secrets in the landscaping sector. Fortunately this has changed significantly over the course of the last 12 months.”

Now 33 local authorities are trialling recycled wood products and five major studies of the material’s use have been established with a view to understanding more about it.
