Britain's billionaire scrap business

The boss of the world’s largest metal recycling firm has made it to number 60 in the Sunday Times Rich List, becoming the UK’s first scrapyard billionaire.

Robin Sheppard and family, owners of Cheshire-based European Metal Recycling, are reportedly worth £1.24bn.

The Sunday Times reported EMR’s profits rose to £155m on sales of £2.4bn in 2010. It said the company crushes more than one million vehicles a year.

The £1.2bn multinational operation is reported to have assets of £594m of assets.

In 2011 the Sheppards were at number 123 on the list, with £635m.
