Building Material Re-use Centres to be set up in the UK

A not-for-profit environmental charity has received funding from the Centre for Remanufacturing and Reuse, a Government funded body, to set up Building Material Re-use Centres (BMRCs) in the UK. BioRegional hopes that BMRCs will bring cut price reclaimed building products to small scale trade and the general public while reducing environmental impact. Reclaimed building products can include as-new bricks and timber, roofing tiles, fencing and garden paving. The environmental charity also hopes to work together with social enterprises, local authorities and the building industry to help support the establishment of three to five different centres across the UK. BioRegional reclamation officer Ronan Leyden said: We are working in partnership with the social enterprise and reclamation sectors to develop a viable business plan for BMRCs. These BMRCs will combine sustainable waste services for building site with Do-It-Yourself style retail outlets. This will provide the general public with access to quality second-use building products at a fraction of the retail price. By working in collaboration with local authorities and vocational training providers, the BMRC businesses will generate considerable social and environmental benefits. BMRCs will be unique centres for sustainability and learning, and part of an important shift towards a sustainable building industry. BMRCs are known as ReStores in the US and several US towns and cities have them. According to BioRegional the UK already has social enterprises retailing reusable materials such as wood or furniture. Up until now, it claims that none have focused on the reusing of building materials. BioRegional will be working together with other sustainable material specialists WasteWise and Masco to develop a business plan to develop the BMRCs.
