Call for composters

Draft guidelines on the use of compost derived from source-segregated organic municipal wastes in agriculture and field horticulture are due to be produced by Enviros Consulting.

Commissioned by the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) the draft will be guided by earlier consultations with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Environment Agency and key stakeholders from the agricultural sector.

The guidelines will be aimed mainly at agronomists, regulators, and advisers to the agricultural industry, to provide them with information on using compost effectively. They will build on BSI PAS100:2005, defining the characteristics of compost suitable for a range of agricultural applications and provide information on maximising the benefits of compost in soil management.

An industry consultation is being carried out by Enviros Consulting until March 17, and all interested parties are asked to contribute their views. Copies of consultation documents can be obtained by e-mailing or contacting Steve Horrax on 0161 874 3628.
