Campaign looks to cut northern glass waste

A new campaign is set to target 17,000 premises in 30 northern England cities and towns in an attempt to drastically cut the amount of glass waste produced.

The hospitality industry creates around 600,000 tonnes of related waste annually in the UK, and now Recycling Action Yorkshire, Envirolink Northwest and Renew Tees Valley have joined forces to establish the Have you Got the Bottle? initiative.

And in a showing of backing for this, 15 major recycling organisations and local authorities attended a seminar in Wakefield, Yorkshire, where they pledged their support and signed up to the scheme.

Spokesman for the three founder organisations Ben Stone said: We had a really encouraging response to the Have You Got the Bottle? seminar; it produced some stimulating and lively discussion about the issues facing glass recyclers when targeting the hospitality industry.

We are also very pleased that so many pledged their support to the campaign and signed up to take part.

However, Stone noted that there are still more glass recyclers in the region and the call was going out for all waste management organisations in the north of England to get in touch.
The more companies that sign up, the stronger and more effective the initiative will be, he added.
