Case study: Arighi Bianchi achieves zero waste to landfill

Macclesfield-based Arighi Bianchi, a CRUK member, is a furniture and flooring retailer with a large flooring department that supplies nationwide.

It has achieved zero waste to landfill through recycling both new carpet offcuts and post-consumer carpet, resulting in substantial savings in disposal cost.

Flooring department manager Neville Hinchliffe (left in picture) was named Recycling Champion in the 2015 CRUK Awards for his enthusiastic commitment to recycling and its promotion (shown receiving his prize from Mark Shayler of agency Ape). The company works closely with two recyclers to divert all of its carpet waste from landfill.

It sends fitting offcuts to Anglo Recycling for use in new underlay. Uplifted post-consumer carpet and underlay is collected and compacted using a Carpet Crusher developed by Kenburn, another CRUK member. This material, with its high calorific value, is used to power cement kilns.

Hinchliffe says: “We have diverted hundreds of tonnes a year from landfill and significantly reduced waste management costs. We are fully committed to our recycling journey. Our shop floor and fitting staff are fully behind it and it’s a great story to tell our customers!”
