CIWM welcomes Government recognition of environmental sector potential

Government recognition of the potential growth opportunities of the environmental services sector has been welcomed by the Chartered Institution of Waste Management.

Lord Mandelson highlighted the potential of the green sector in a speech about job creation today (see MRW story).

CIWM deputy chief executive Chris Murphy said: Its great that such a high profile person as Lord Mandelson is making a statement about the potential of the environmental sector and were optimistic about what this means. But wed like to see what he means by the term environmental services. It could cover a multitude of issues rather than what we might consider it to mean in relation to recycling and waste companies.

Murphy said that CIWM officials had a meeting planned with BERR next week and he hoped to find out more details then.

I dont want to sound pessimistic, but the Governments attention is on trying to keep existing established industries, like the car manufacturers, afloat, he added. But, this statement is a good step forward.
