Coffee shop chain joins cup recycling scheme

High street coffee chain Costa has signed up to the new Simply Cups paper cup recovery and recycling membership scheme.

Simply Cups, the only UK service specialising in recycling disposable beverage cups, is a partnership between Closed Loop Environmental Solutions and Simply Waste Solutions.

Paper cups were difficult to recycle due to the line layer of polyethylene in their design. Simply Cups has devised a system whereby the cup is pulped in water, causing the plastic and paper to separate. This allows the two materials to be recycled individually.

Ollie Rosevear, Energy and Environment Manager at Whitbread, parent company of Costa, said: “Costa is always looking for new innovations, partnerships and collaborative efforts to lead the way in developing sustainable solutions to reduce the impact of our cups on the environment. Our membership is a great example of this ongoing work.”

Currently it is estimated that 2.5 billion paper cups are sent to landfills or incinerated instead of being recycled.

Simply Cups, launched on 1 August, operates within the M25 and Thames Valley region but is anticipated to grow into a countrywide business.
