Continuing fall in waste sent to landfill

The amount of waste being dumped in landfills at the standard landfill tax rate has seen a further decline, according to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

New figures revealed a 15.7% drop in waste classified as “non-inert” for tax purposes sent to landfill in the year to September 2011 compared to the previous year.

During the 2011 period 22.48m tonnes of waste was landfilled. The figure for the year to April 2011 was 24.88 tonnes.

Independent consultant Keith Kondakor said: “Some regions will reach near zero non-inert land-filling in six years’ time.”
