Corus PRNs can boost recycling

Revenue from sales of Packaging Recovery Notes (PRNs) helped Corus to significantly increase the recycling of steel cans and packaging last year, according to the steel maker's latest annual PRN report.

Backed by PRN-derived funds, Corus' CanRoute system increased its recycling of steel cans by 80% in 2004. Some 25,000 tonnes of steel passed through the system, which takes cans from local authorities and the scrap industry to five Corus reprocessing plants.

Corus said its investments funded recycling initiatives with 31 local authorities, community groups and waste management firms. PRN sales also funded industry-led research including studies to determine levels of steel packaging in the waste stream and to assess the role of Energy from Waste plants and kerbside collection schemes in can recycling.

Corus manager John May said: "Strategic planning is a key element of this so, as well as investing in the UK's recycling infrastructure, the next 12 months will see a shift towards an emphasis on (local authority) participation."
