Council contract for Viridor extended

Viridor has won a three-year extension to its contract with the London borough of Tower Hamlets to process domestic mixed recyclable materials.

Viridor has been working with Tower Hamlets for the past four years to sort and market recyclates at its MRF in Crayford, Kent. In that time, recycling levels in the borough have increased from 13% in 2008 to the current level of 29%.

Viridor operations manager for London Dave Fitzgerald said: “We are confident that through our Crayford facility we will be able to further help the council to recover more materials for recycling. Last year we installed a state-of-the-art shredder to deal with hard plastics on-site, further increasing recycling levels.”

Tower Hamlets council service head Jamie Blake said: “We conducted a competitive tendering process to ensure we continue to deliver value for money to our residents. We are looking forward to continue working together to further boost our recycling performance.”
