Defra apologises for ‘over Christmas’ consultation

A consultation on amending glass packaging targets will be run during the festive period, Defra has announced.

In a letter to stakeholders, Sarah Steeds, producer responsibility team leader at Defra, said that Defra would be consulting on whether to change the 81% recycling target for obligated glass producers.

“But due to the time constraints associated with ensuring any amendment is communicated in Budget 2014, we are going to have to run a shortened consultation period over the Christmas period. We apologise for any inconvenience that this might cause you.”

The letter was published on the website of consultancy 360 Environmental.

Defra had said it would consult on amending the glass target following the publication of the GlassFlow 2012 report by WRAP and Valpak in October.

The study suggested that less glass than what previously estimated was put onto the UK market last year and prompted calls for a review of the business glass recycling target.
