Defra waste team merges with sustainable business and resource efficiency teams

Colin Church, Defra’s director for waste policy, will be in charge of a bigger remit, including sustainable business, resource efficiency and sustainable development.

Church (left) announced the broader scope of his team at the CIWM conference last week (12 June). There was some confusion about whether Church would be taking on a new role. But he clarified that he would be taking on more responsibility and have a new job title, but would not be moving out of waste policy.

The shift will occur on 1 July. A Defra spokesperson said it will be reflected by a bigger team by around 40 staff members, although it is not yet known what Church’s new job title will be.

Church told MRW that the move would create “an even more holistic and integrated approach to resource efficiency and waste”.
