Demand grows for reusable crates

Tesco's reusable plastic crates have proven so popular that three million more have been ordered, taking the total number in use to 12 million.

The crates reduce packaging, and 225 million green tray trips this year have already saved over 112,500 tonnes of cardboard.

Tesco corporate purchasing director Patrick Burrows said: "Initially the use of green trays was developed to reduce cardboard waste through the supply chain from the supplier to the shop floor. But the trays are so popular that some suppliers have scrapped cardboard altogether and are using green trays throughout their own businesses."

Since their launch in 2000, the method has helped eliminate packaging waste for items such as soft drinks bottles, vegetables and other groceries.

Burrows added: "Using green trays has helped the environment and has also led to cost savings. Although the green trays mean initial outlay, they are re-used for years bringing landfill tax avoidance savings for both Tesco and our suppliers, which can be passed on to our customers."
