Dozens of jobs lost as waste firm goes under

Administrators have taken over a Sunderland waste management firm, which has collapsed with the loss of 50 jobs.

Steven Ross and Allan Kelly, both of Baker Tilly Restructuring and Recovery, were appointed on 7 May following the failure of Alex Smiles, which is no longer trading after 42 years.

The month before, related company WR Logistics closed and around 30 people were made redundant.

Baker Tilly said it was currently working to sell off the firm’s assets in order to pay creditors.

In March, local media reported that the Environment Agency has served legal notices relating to waste stored at its nine-acre site in excess of the permit.

The effect was to ban any further material being accepted amid concerns over the risk of fire.

Alex Smiles Ltd was created in 1973 by Alex and Jane Smiles and grew to employ more 80 people.

It moved onto its nine-acre site in 2002 with a new, £2m materials recycling facility, which was extended in 2009.
