Economic downturn creates benefits for 'responsible operators'

The economic downturn will create positive opportunities for responsible operators, according to metal recycling company Sims Group.

Sims says that the sharp decrease in the price of commodities will impact upon illegal shipments of electronic waste as rogue traders will find markets difficult to sustain. The firm says that this will create new opportunities on the buy side [profit from market movements] with key players in the industry consolidating and developing relationships with clients seeking genuine compliance with legislation.

Sims Recycling Solutions chief executive officer Graham Davy said: Despite the difficult economic conditions, we are taking the opportunity to establish quality relationships with new clients and build on existing ones.

By maintaining low stocks, investing in maximising quality of recovered materials, maintaining investment in process improvement and operating a global energy saving programme, we can expect to ride out the downturn and reap the benefits when market conditions improve.
