Endurance test passed by Sims Metal boss

Imagine running 250 kilometres over six days through the Sahara desert, in temperatures exceeding 40 degrees celsius and losing over a stone in weight in the process.

This torturous experience was exactly what the boss of a metal recycling firm endured to raise over £24,000 for children's charity Childline.

Sims Metal managing director Tom Bird completed the gruelling Marathon des Sables- dubbed the toughest race on earth - in 39 hours, 59 minutes and 41 seconds.

He said: ""I would like to say thank you to everyone who has supported me and helped me raise the money for Childline. The event was everything I expected and more, an experience that forced me to dig deeper than I thought possible"

"Although I finished the race on pain killers and anti-inflammatories, my suffering was put in perspective by the courage shown by a number of other competitors who finished the race with injuries ranging from stress fractures to literally no skin on their feet."

Bird finished 249th in an international field of nearly 800 athletes and will present Childline with a cheque on June 3 at Sims Group UK's head office in Stratford-upon-Avon.
