A massive 394 tonnes of cans – equivalent to more than 4,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions – were recycled by businesses last year with help from Every Can Counts.
The initiative, funded by European and UK drinks manufacturers of aluminium and steel cans, now plans to roll out projects that will encourage recycling in new areas this summer.
Every Can Counts works by providing businesses with a branded programme to encourage staff and customers to recycle. There are currently 4,000 Every Can Counts recycling points across the UK.
Last year, participating businesses recycled 27 million drinks cans, and during the past two years the number of companies taking part has grown to 400. Businesses are able to use the programme to help them achieve corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability objectives, including zero waste to landfill targets.
Every Can Counts marketing and communications manager Diana Caldwell said: “More and more organisations are joining the programme as they understand the contribution it can make to workplace recycling and CSR schemes.
“This summer sees the programme embarking on projects to encourage recycling in new areas, and so we have high hopes that it will continue to flourish into 2011 and beyond.”
