Exports hit industry output

Exports of waste materials led to a fall in the industry’s UK production this summer, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Its Index of Production figures, just published for August 2015, showed that the water supply, sewerage and waste management sector saw its output fall by 2.5% from the previous month, although it was up by 6% on the August 2014 level, largely driven by growth in the sewerage sub-sector.

The ONS said the monthly decrease reflected falls in the sewerage, remediation and waste collection, treatment and disposal sub-sectors, with the latter the worst affected.

“Anecdotal evidence suggested the industry displayed a widespread weakness, with exports highlighted as a contributing factor,” the ONS commentary said.

A spokesman told MRW this referred to waste materials being sent abroad rather than being used, recycled or disposed of within the UK.
