Ferrybridge power station goes into action

The £300m Ferrybridge Multifuel 1 power station has entered full commercial operation.

Operator Multifuel Energy is a 50:50 joint venture project between electricity generator SSE and Wheelabrator Technologies.

Multifuel Energy said the facility would use waste-derived fuels to contribute around 70MW of electricity to the National Grid, enough to power around 160,000 homes.

The power station had been under construction for more than three years by main contractor Hitachi Zosen Inova.

Multifuel Energy director of engineering and operations Tom Mallet said: “The commencement of commercial operations at the Ferrybridge Multifuel 1 project is a great achievement for everyone who has been involved.”
