The fire started at around 9am underneath the cab of the vehicle which then spread to the fuel tanks and ignited the surrounding surface area of the landfill.
Viridor staff initially tried to tackle the blaze, which created plumes of smoke visible for some distance, with water bowsers and were joined by seven fire engines.
The blaze was finally extinguished at 10am and the site re-opened in the afternoon.
No one was injured during the fire that started while the vehicle was in the process of depositing non-hazardous reject plastics.
Viridor area landfill manager Nigel Steward said: I would like to praise the swift response of Viridor employees on site who implemented our procedures quickly and helped contain the fire. Id also like to thank the fire service for their vital assistance. We are reviewing the full extent of the incident but will continue to provide essential waste disposal services to our clients with minimal disruption.
