Fire destroys paper at recycling site

Around 150 tonnes of baled paper have been destroyed by fire at SCA Recycling’s Cambridge site.

Cambridge Fire and Rescue Service, along with crews from Cottenham and Sawston, were called to the scene at 9.10am on Thursday and the fire was put out in the early hours of Friday morning.

Fire officers said the cause was not yet known but the incident was not being treated as suspicious.

SCA director Steve Smith told MRW: “An investigation is still being carried out. The amount of paper that has been damaged is not a significant amount. The fire is more of an irritation because it is now wet and disposal is made more difficult.

“No-one was injured and no property was damaged. I can’t remember us having a fire in more than 15 years.”
