Fire services tackle blaze in Widnes

Firemen in Widnes are battling to control a blaze at a warehouse containing recycling plastics and paper.

Fifteen fire engines have been tackling the fire at the site of JL Sorting in Johnson’s Lane which broke out last night.

Recycling material stored outside the warehouse spread the fire to two neighbouring units also containing recycling products, according to Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service.

A high volume pump and hydraulic platform have been used to fight the fire.

On arrival crews found a warehouse measuring approximately 60 metres by 30 metres well alight and the attendance was increased to six and then 10 fire engines. The high volume pump was also sent to the scene to provide water.

Residents have been urged to keep doors and windows closed as large amounts of smoke are being given off from the site.

It is unclear how much recycling material has been destroyed, but fire fighters were still battling to contain the fire this morning.
