Havering has launched the first borough-wide rewards scheme for waste reduction and recycling in London.
Residents from over 100,000 homes are provided with an account that they need to active online.
The London Borough of Havering has been divided into eight communities which will be assessed on their waste reduction and recycling improvement efforts. Residents will receive “Green Points” on their account accordingly.
The points can be donated by residents to 11 local charity and community projects or spent on over 1,000 products and vouchers, which have been vetted by an independent sustainability advisory panel.
Residents will also be provided with a card that allows them to receive discounts at local shops and businesses across the borough and online.
The cost of the rewards scheme will be covered by a grant the council has received from the Department for Communities and Local Government as part of the £250m weekly collection support scheme.
Similar initiatives but at a smaller scale are running in the London boroughs of Bexley and Greenwich in London.
