Food waste service launched for London businesses

A London recycling firm has launched a food recycling service for business which aims to divert 1,000 tonnes from landfill by 2015.

First Mile launched the new service for central London food service businesses with the support of WRAP funding.

The service allows restaurants, take-aways and hotels to order pre-paid food sack and arrange a time for collection from the kerbside or store room.

WRAP is also supporting the scheme with advice on communicating with businesses and providing waste prevention tools.

Bruce Bratley, chief executive of First Mile, said: “This new food waste recycling service complements our other services and is an important step towards First Mile’s zero waste vision. We are delighted to receive WRAP’s help and support during the launch of this exciting new service.”

Linda Crichton, head of collections and quality at WRAP added: “Preventing and reducing waste is the most important thing we can do, and we hope to encourage all businesses to reduce their waste management costs as much as possible by preventing and reducing waste in the first instance.”
